Have you ever just wanted a clear guide to writing an “About Me” page on your website? Raise your hand if any of this makes you feel straight up SEEN.

Does trying to write your “About Me” on your site always feel like you’re the least interesting person in the world?

Do you struggle to describe your personality?

Do you even feel a little clueless about what exactly that “About Me” page should say or what the whole dang page should have on it?

Oh hey, you ARE NOT ALONE. Literally every entrepreneur feels this when it comes to that blinking cursor on your website bio. Get ready, here’s your clearcut guide to writing an “About Me” page.
Use the BRANDSPEAK five-point framework to nail writing about yourself:

GRAB THEIR ATTENTION
Start your bio with a question, a fact or a “say what?!” attention-grabbing statement. Examples could be:

If you had the option, why wouldn’t you photograph parties for a living?

Meet the woman who jumped out of an airplane and lived to photograph your wedding.

A dance off with my celebrity crush was my literal dream and on November 11th, 2014 it actually happened.

MAKE IT PERSONABLE
Generally, you want to write about yourself in first person, not third person. First-person is when you write how you would talk, like “I’m obsessed with ice cream”. This sounds so much more personable and welcoming than writing in third person, which sounds like, “Sarah enjoys ice cream”. First-person is more engaging because it feels like a conversation and conversation is connecting. If you have multiple bios on your website or are going for a luxury brand experience, writing in third person may be more appropriate. (Looking for an example? See the work we did for Lucas Rossi Photography.)

VOCAB WITH A VIBE
Skip trying to describe your personality and instead just write with words that sound like how you talk.

If you have an upbeat and peppy personality, use shorter sentences with bright and fun sounding descriptive words. Throw in an exclamation point here! and! there!

If you have a calm and relaxed personality, use longer sentences with soothing and chill sounding words (and skip the exclamation points!!).

TELL YOUR STORY
Tell your story, not what you offer. When we aren’t sure what to write about for ourselves, we automatically gravitate towards writing about what we offer because we’re the most comfortable sharing our skillset or offerings. Here’s the thing, sharing what you offer is should happen on the rest of your website, not this page. On your “About Me”, focus on what made YOU who you are and what brought YOU to where you stand today. Here’s a quick example so this is crystal clear:

sharing what you offer (boring) – I bring the vision of your wedding day to life through florals.
sharing your story (ooo tell me more) – My love for blooms all started 10 years ago when I was rambling through the Paris flower market in college, wondering what I was going to do with my one wild and special life…

SHARE YOUR PASSION
Along with sharing your story, share where that passion for your skillset comes from. Did you study it in college? Did you pick up your skills while working in another career? Were you inspired to become good at what you do because something major happened in your personal life? These are the connection points that will make your ideal clientele fall in love with not just what you offer, but with you.

By following this framework, you’ll have your guide to writing an “About Me” for your website. Don’t forget to add calls to action to inquire and check out your work, too! Guide whoever is browsing right where you want them to go. Trust us, this formula works! If you put the framework into action and are looking for feedback, tag us in your story on Instagram at @brandspeak_studio and we’ll DM you with a free, mini-review of your bio. Yes, really!
